Speaker: Dr. Richard Cowles

Title: The Queen of Your Dreams

Abstract: Poor health of honey bees and other pollinators has led to a surge in beekeeping in Connecticut. Colonies often die over the winter, which leads to a vicious cycle of having to buy new packages of bees with new queens each spring. This presentation will describe the efforts at the Agricultural Experiment Station to find practical ways to improve the genetics of queen bees to improve resistance to varroa mites, which is essential to improving overwintering survival, and to propagate queens to satisfy the needs of our state’s beekeepers.

Bio: Dr. Richard Cowles currently works at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station. He research efforts are focused on improving management of arthropod pests on crops, including spotted wing drosophila, hemlock woolly adelgids, armored scales, white grubs, black vine weevil, and spider mites.
